#OTD in 1945, Irma Grese, also known as "The Beautiful Beast" was executed by hanging in Hameln Prison for war crimes.
She was unsuccessful in training as a nurse, so in June 1941 she volunteered for SS Helferinnen training at Ravensbrück.

In March 1943 she was transferred to Auschwitz-Birkenau where she eventually gained the second highest rank a SS female concentration camp personel could gain. She was a sadist who took pleasure in shooting prisoners and toying with them for her amusement.
In January 1945 she was evacuated to Ravensbrück and then onto KL Bergen-Belsen in March the same year. She behaved the same sadistic way in Belsen as she did in Auschwitz.
She was arrested by British troops on 18th April 1945 and stood trial with 44 others during the Bergen-Belsen trial.
A witness during the trial stated:
"She (Grese) was always active at the camp gate making inspections, and if any of the prisoners wore another stocking or another shoe, or anything like that, he or she would be beaten by her."
