to the NIPs debate folk:

1. Nobody's offended by the acronym, at least not anybody with the fortitude to long on to Twitter.
2. It's a joke. We get it. We could choose to ignore it.
3. You're the same people who say "women distract men in the lab" or
"girls shouldn't wear yoga pants in high schools because it distracts boys."
4. Yet you're also the same people saying its harmless. Which is it? Are men incapable of controlling themselves or are they harmless?
5. Nobody "suddenly started attacking everyone." That's a lie.
6. Because those people spent years lobbying and months calmly, rationally, and politely making their points in a professional and friendly way.
7. Then they won. The name got changed.
8. Then some people went online trashing the winners and talking a metric ton of shit.
9. and THEN the winners showed up to engage in civil discourse.
10. and were condescended to. and belittled. and mocked.
11. And then they (we) took off the kid gloves and gave it back.
12. NIPs is an unnecessary distraction that actually caused real people to be uncomfortable
13. A professional, in the work place, would recognize that it's unnecessary and say "It doesn't bother me, but because it bothers you and any sane person could see why it might bother a woman, I support you and this change."
14: And, this is the important part: NOBODY is offended by NIPs. We just wanted everyone, within reason, to feel welcome and it isn't unreasonable IN A GLOBAL COMMUNITY to expect that NIPs would make some people with something to contribute uncomfortable.
15. If you don't like that some people went through the process to create change, created that change, and then told you why: then don't trash those people publicly and expect them to agree to disagree.
16. Because it's not just words. It's never "just words" dummies. It's a symbol: and given the choice between supporting the change or demanding that people who take offense change who they are, you chose a name over people. And we have to live with that and try to work with you
17. Words make bibles, Constitutions, and contracts. Actions bind those words. NIPs had no meaning but what YOU gave it. Your snickers, jokes, T-shirts, and jokes on Reddit made it a running gag.

Running gags are often harmful. "One of these days... pow right in the kisser."
18. No matter how we, or Colin Kaepernick, or nasty women, or uppity queers do it: You don't like the way we disagree with you. When @AnimaAnandkumar went through the legit process to get the name changed you hated it just as much as when someone like me calls you a misogynist.
19. So we don't let you dictate the terms of our existence. You can whine and cry all day long. But at the end of the day you're stuck in our world. We keep winning, you keep whining, and when it's all said an done: women, queers, and POCs WILL be equals in STEM one day.
