Great coverage of recent leadership gains for women in #Peru by @VICE @SimeonTegel, feat words of @paulanarvaezo. I'll add: this new generation of women politicians didn't "just happen." Peruvian women have been gaining political power for some time. 1/4 https://www.vice.com/en/article/jgqj8d/a-wave-of-women-just-swept-into-power-in-the-country-of-rapists
#Peru has one the oldest gender quota laws in Latin America. Women have been abt 1/4 of Peru's congress for ~20+ years and will be 50% of candidates in 2021. Keiko Fujimori narrowly missed the presidency twice. (
my article in @AmerQuarterly). 2/4 https://americasquarterly.org/article/when-do-quotas-in-politics-work-latin-america-offers-lessons/

My research w/ @kendallfunk12 & Magda Hinojosa shows that in #LatinAmerica, as voters unhappiness with congress & parties & corruption goes
, parties nominate more
to signal a new direction. In empowering women post-crisis, #Peru is not unique. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/11/06/after-weeks-latin-american-protests-expect-see-more-women-elected-office/

Of course, there's problems w/ hoping women will save the country-- namely, holding women to higher standards than men. But that's a different story. For more on #women & politics in #Peru, follow @prof_jmorgan @cewig @bea_llanos. 4/4
