So the new plan from the Bernie Left is to threaten to make McCarthy the Speaker if Nancy doesn't promise to bring "Medicare for All" to the floor.

Let's count all the ways this is a criminally stupid plan.

1/
First of all, if they DID make McCarthy Speaker, all hell would break loose.

Can you imagine? Sacrificing a hard won majority over a symbolic vote over legislation that nobody wants?

It would destroy their personal credibility, and reveal Bernie's movement for what it is.

2/
They say they want to "send a message" and "demonstrate their power."

The message that would send would expose their movement for what is is.

They'd be using their power to empower Republicans. We know this is their ultimate goal, but this would make it undeniable.

3/
And why to they want to force a vote on M4A?

They know it won't pass.

Again, they want to "send a message" and "put people on the record."

So they'd be using this imaginary leverage for... nothing.

Worse than nothing - they'd be demonstrating how unpopular it actually is.

4/
It's really too bad blackmailing Nancy is the only way to get what they want.

Apparently they've given up on passing the bill through committee.

If only there were a mechanism for discharging legislation and bringing it to a vote... maybe a petition of some sort... 🤔

5/
I know!! Why don't they file a "discharge petition" - to bypass the committee process and force a vote?

Wouldn't that accomplish the same thing? It would put Members on the record. A list, if you will.

They could tweet angrily at anyone who refuses to sign.

6/
It's usually a procedural mechanism for the Minority to bypass the Majority.

Look at all the Democrats lined up to sign the discharge petition to reopen the government in 2013.

A beautiful day.

7/
Then again, they are the ultimate minority.

“They didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.”

-- Nancy Pelosi

And the expansion pack makes, what, seven?

h/t @BlueSteelDC

8/
So a discharge petition is unlikely to work, because... nobody wants the damn policy.

Just like a floor vote would fail.

So what's this really about?

9/
What is it ALWAYS about for the Bernie Left?

Attention. LOOK AT ME ME ME ME ME!!!

I can take down the great Nancy Pelosi.
I can put GOP in charge.
I have POWER and I MATTER.

10/
That's not power. It's just another temper tantrum.

No different than holding a protest in a parking lot across from an empty DNC office building DEMANDING that Biden put Bernie or a Bernie proxy in the Cabinet.

They made a lot of noise. But in the end, no one cared.

11/
Process isn't exciting.

Apparently getting a bill through committee and to the floor under regular order is WAY TOO HARD for AOC.

She can't be bothered.

Especially when there are far better ways to generate headlines and draw attention to herself.
