Current academic frustration:
Now is the perfect time to rethink how we train people (especially academics) in key skills, like qual or quant research, article writing, engaging in public scholarship, etc. It is still effective and worthwhile to offer those trainings online. 1/

Requiring that people (especially students, adjuncts, and independent academics) find thousands of dollars to travel/stay/register/present/attend limits access. There have been lots of innovative and altruistic ideas proposed to help offset these financial barriers. 2/
For example, the "buy 1, get one/donate one" model of paying for a professional org membership. This allows people who can afford a membership to purchase a significantly discounted membership to "donate". It could also mean orgs setting aside memberships so that every 3/
"full membership" automatically means a "reduced cost membership (like those for students, adjuncts, independents, community members" is made available for free. These trainings are especially essential now when many of the resources and access points have been limited 4/
by COVID, budget cuts, travel restrictions, and the other always existing financial and logistical barriers at access and attendance. That said, remembering that the funding structures at a lot of universities can mean that we have to apply for grants MONTHS in advance is 5/
is also central to access. What are creative ways to use recordings, meeting series, online resources/tools, collective effort, AND these institutional funding structures to increase access and altruism? Do your peers already do this? (FYI- your peers 100% are already 6/
practicing this altruism. For example, when a student wins a grant that covers travel and hotel and then let's other students stayin the room for free so they can attend the conference too, THAT is using their institutional funding to increase the access of others to these 7/
essential professional and training opportunities.) There are a lot of models for uplifting others and carrying others with you when you succeed, and it seems like now is great time to be creative and intentional with how we do this and how can do this in the future. 8/
So I guess the tl;dr here is: I want to attend your online training/professionalization event and I can use career development grants/university money to do so only if you share your event MONTHS in advance, AND I am committed to bringing others with me to help more of us 9/
succeed (esp POC, 1st gen, disabled, and women), and I want us to work together to do this. Let's create opportunities to carry each other to success with greater intention. TL;DR 2: You can have my money if I can save a seat for another future leader and change agent. 10/10
