I dunno who needs to hear this but being queer is not a personality. It’s not a style of acting. It’s not a mask you can put on and take off. There is no authentic way to “act” gay or “act” straight.
Being feminine does not equate to homosexuality. Being butch does not equate to heterosexuality. Vice versus. There are feminine men who date women. There are masculine women who date men. Sexuality is a spectrum.
Believe me - I want actors to be able to act in roles outside of their experience - but to ignore the dynamics of our society in lieu of “the art of acting” is a red herring.
Straight people aren’t dragged from their houses and excecuted in the street because they found the opposite sex attractive. They never have been and they never will be. That in and of Itself should be proof enough that authentic gay visibility is VITAL.
Queer people are literally struggling to maintain equitable human rights AS I WRITE THIS. Like did you all fall and smack your little heads on the pavement???
Just cast the fucking gay or trans character with the best openly gay or trans actor and let them hold space without policing it for yourselves. It’s called being a fucking ally.
When we don’t have to march in the street to protect ourselves - y’all can play all the lesbians you want. When trans women no longer have a life expectancy of 35 fucking years old - y’all can live your acting wet dreams of going through transition.
Y’all really wanna play someone trans? Fight for their rights until every single trans woman is safe. Dismantle stigma around them so much that dating someone trans isn’t even a second thought. Until then: shut the fuck up and give us our space.
Ya’ll sound fucking DIZZY telling people who literally risk their lives to exist as openly gay to give straight people (who move through the world without an ounce of consequence) a “fair chance” at queer roles. Get a fucking grip.
