Chelsea’s Formation change 3-5-2: A THREAD.

-

With the ever growing list of injuries to our wingers, it’s possibly time to explore a new temporary formation.
1st: THE TEAM

Giroud. Werner.

Havertz

Chilwell Jorginho. Kante James

Zouma. Silva. Azpi (C)

Mendy

Subs: Pulisic, Tomori, Kovacic, Caballero, Tammy, Gilmour, Alonso
2nd: Wingbacks

Wingbacks provide much needed width - similar to what Alonso and Moses provided for Conte four years prior. In our recent game against Everton, we struggled to find space and break through the midfield due to the lack of wide players, Reece and Ben provide this.
3rd: Timo and Oli

Werner utilised efficiently - playing off a true target man (Giroud), much like he did under Nagelsmaan for Leipzig last year with Shick/Poulssen. His xG much higher when playing in a 2. Also, Giroud has experience of this style - e.g. with Hazard and Sanchez.
4th: Kai Havertz

Havertz has struggled in recent times as an 8 and RW - partly due to COVID. He looked way more comfortable as a 10 and could be deployed similarly to Aouar for Lyon in the 3-5-2 - shown to be successful in their 3-1 win against Man City in the UCL last year.
5th: Final Verdict

This formation, in my opinion will be useful due to recent injuries with our wide players - utilising the attacking style of our fullbacks and getting the best out of players in need of form - e.g. Havertz and Werner.
