So many people are misunderstanding what my proposal was for the General Election in 2024. Or putting their own spin on things. This is what I suggest. That people get behind locals (or someone with a connection) that are politically active and known in their area.
For example, how good is Keir Starmer as an MP? What does he actually do to represent his constituents in Parliament? He spends all his time waging war on the Labour Party members that he doesn’t like and attacking his predecessor to satisfy his donors.
So you get someone to stand as an independent in that area who will truly represent that area. They will be concerned with environmental issues, parking, local schools, council funding, local hospitals etc. True grassroots issues.
They will make themselves known by holding meetings and hearing local concerns and worries. Then will go to local shopping centres and places of worship to discuss issues. They will build up a network of allies who are willing to door knock and leaflet for them.
They build this steadily over the next four years. They will keep challenging the current MP and highlighting the areas in which they are failing. Then by the next election they will be in a strong position to win the seat.
Yes the bigger parties have more money but that is simply no match for being genuinely concerned about the area you want to represent. You don’t make deals or offer to withdraw candidates. This is a genuine attempt to have fairer representation in Parliament.
We need MP’s that will vote the way their constituents want them to. Not the way that the leader of some huge out of touch party whips them to. The current political system is simply not fit for purpose. Far too many MP’s are out of touch and only concerned with themselves.
It could work even in places where the current MP has a huge majority. There are far too many politicians that are only in their seats cause there is no viable alternative on the ballot. That needs to change. Creasy, Phillips, Lammy, Streeting are not beloved in their areas.
I’ve just had a look at Birmingham Yardley where Jess Phillips has her seat. By 2024 she will have had that seat for 9 yrs. Before her it was held by the Lib Dems for 10 years and before that Labour had it for 13. It is still a very deprived area. Big parties aren’t helping them.
This is the racial make up of Birmingham Yardley. Phillips has 54.8% of the vote. This sounds impossible but it isn’t. She has insulted some of her constituents and her failed bid for leadership proves her lack of competence. She can easily be beaten.
Stella Creasy has 76.1% of the vote. I used to live in Walthamstow and it has a huge left wing presence and a lot of them are active politically. Creasy is not liked but they will vote for her cause they won’t vote Tory. When she voted to bomb Syria it didn’t go down well AT ALL.
Take a local activist like Sophie Bolt or @Aaron_Kiely to challenge her from the left and run as an independent and she could find herself in all kinds of trouble. There is a huge Muslim community there and if different groups pull together she won’t stand a chance.
Walthamstow is being gentrified to hell and a lot of the original communities are being left completely behind. They don’t want an MP whose only concern is sitting in the village sipping tea with the Yummy Mummy’s. They want real representation.
