The knee jerk reaction from some that fishing simply isn’t that important is unhelpful. Sure, it accounts for 0.1% of the UK’s economy, but it employs 24,000, it’s one of Scotland’s dominant exports, and it sustains entire communities.
Fishing is often spoken about as though the industry speaks with one voice. Broadly speaking, there’s dissatisfaction with the CFP across the board, but the interests of conglomerate multimillion pound fleets and that of the likes of smaller inland boats don’t always match.
While the Common Fisheries Policy is heavily criticised, many in the industry voiced concerns about trade barriers outside of the EU. The latter doesn’t seem to overrule the former - the majority in the sector want to leave the EU - but that doesn’t mean there aren’t concerns.
Given we know fishing isn’t a homogeneous voice on a range of issues - species, vessel length etc - who are the Tories fighting for? Much of the negotiations dialogue looks like posturing and bargaining chips, but something tells me big business interests will come first.
