(Short đŸ§”)

There has been lots of messaging about COVID case rates in Luton and the need for people to ‘keep safe’ to ‘save lives’.

Whilst well-intentioned, I know that these messages cause anxiety and feelings of guilt and despair - (1)
because individual ability to keep safe is constrained by their socio-economic conditions. This is one of the reasons why the infection, and, sadly, mortality rates are higher in poorer towns like Luton. We live in a deeply unequal society, and it is killing us. (2)
This will remain true even after COVID, God-willing, passes.

I have in the last weeks been quite unwell with Covid, though thankfully now recovering. My overwhelming thoughts and feelings from that experience are that I would not have been able to self-isolate and recover (3)
had not been for the support of my wonderful family and friends. With that comes the reminder that many people in our communities will not have that same support.

The focus on individual responsibility fails to acknowledge the complete absence of the state and failure (4)
to protect us and keep us safe.

So I will keep saying - if we want to reduce cases, if we want to save lives, @10DowningStreet and @GOVUK must take seriously the responsibility to keep us all safe.

They have let us down. (5)
Here is a list of fantastic local organisations that will try and help if you are experiencing difficulties.

To the organisations listed below: thank you for all you do ❀ https://twitter.com/lutonfoodbank/status/1334037083053203459
It is a crying shame that this support has had to come from charitable and voluntary organisations.
