Lucifer song analysis: Only You by Yazoo (3x15)

This scene, like Eternal Flame in 2x14, was another grand gesture by Lucifer to express the feelings he can’t put into words. We’ve never seen him do anything comparable for anyone

He chooses a 90s jam since Chloe loves 90s jams. But the song also parallels their own relationship and forebodes the issues they will have in the later episode. The song itself is about losing love but still being in love with the other person

Looking from a window above it’s like a story of love

Not sure what this particular line means but it makes me think of God watching them

At this point in the story, Lucifer is borderline obsessed with the idea that his dad is manipulating him so this line signifies that

Can you hear me?

I see this line as being from Chloe’s POV. She’s desperately trying to show him how she feels about him. Remember 3x23 when she talks about having to deny and squash her feelings. She’s sending all the signs to Lucifer but he’s oblivious and pushes her away

Also I love how they’re holding each other like people used to hold each other in the 90s. Chloe’s prom indeed

I’m moving farther away
Want you near me

In the context of the scene, this line coincides with Lucifer pulling her closer. They start with distance between them then become wrapped around each other. They’re physically closer but emotionally driven apart

Lucifer is becoming so consumed by his obsession with his father that it’s starting to negatively affect his relationships. In 3x10 he hurts Chloe to the point that she calls him an egomaniacal narcissist in 3x12

In later episodes she’ll have had enough and take comfort with Pierce but she’s not there yet. She still desperately wants Lucifer and he desperately wants her. They want to be near each other but are drifting apart

All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day

From Chloe’s POV, all she needs is Lucifer’s love. The love he used to give her in S2, but in S3 he’s changed. He doesn’t share things anymore and conducts cases with Pierce on his own

From Luci’s POV, at this point in the series he’s been neglecting Chloe for awhile now. We see it in 3x1, 3x6, 3x9, 3x10, 3x13. We’ll see it again in 3x16 and 3x17. In 3x17 Chloe snaps and Lucifer realizes he made a terrible mistake

He’s oblivious now but his relationship with her is more fragile than he knows. But he’ll come to realize that all he ever really wanted was her. He was just too caught up to realize it. Remember “I want her to choose me” in 3x21

Since S2, Chloe only has eyes for Lucifer. Even with Pierce, she only agreed to marry him because Lucifer had hurt her as she says in 3x23

At this point Lucifer’s fears over dad is a barrier between him and Chloe, so Luci cannot say only you, because that would be a lie. He’ll come to realize the error in his mistakes with the revelation that he has always been in control in 3x24 when Amenadiel gets his wings back

From S4 onward Luci’s primary motivation is Chloe. His relationship with Eve, his return to Hell, his return back to Earth were all for Chloe. Only her

But his anger toward his dad still has a habit of rearing its head. I do think that is a big thing preventing him from saying ily, yet another barrier between them so his dad is still coming between them even in S5.

Chloe and Lucifer are drifting apart. Their friendship is not a game anymore to them and they need each other, as they will come to learn soon. Chloe even tries to kiss him and he pulls away again

This is from Chloe’s POV. Working with Lucifer is getting harder and harder. He flaunts his sex life in front of her. He keeps secrets from her

She desperately wants him but the relationship is becoming painful for her. It’s becoming more and more difficult and like I said she snaps and goes to Pierce. She also talks about having to squash her feelings in 3x23 and how hard having to work with Lucifer is

All I needed for another day

All Chloe needs is him, but he’s still letting Dad and Pierce get between him and Chloe and he can’t give himself fully to her even in this moment that he planned for her. His primary concern in this convo is Pierce

And all I ever knew
Only you

Chloe only has eyes for Lucifer

But as we see from Lucifer looking up toward God, Lucifer is not in the right state to put Chloe before his problems with his Dad

Overall it was a beautiful song for a beautiful moment, but the song also hints at Lucifer’s issues making a mess of things in his relationship with Chloe down the road. The scene contains some ominous foreshadowing
