This is my critique of the online left and you can take it or leave it: I wish that there was more self-reflection and sharing personal stories that weave the individual experience with the systematic and theoretical level.
That’s what resonates with people (well most). It’s scary because vulnerability is scary. But if we only share what we share based on theory or statistics without the pathos, I don’t think we will win people over.
There is a universality in the individual experience.
We can talk policy all we want but if we don’t appeal to the hearts AND minds, it won’t go anywhere.
Sometimes I think we hide behind theory and statistics because it is easier to share than the highly vulnerable.
The most effective would interweaving the two. And I’m not diminishing the essentialiaty of theory and statistics to fight “facts and logic type”.
But we are already scientifically correct. What we need to interject is the humanity into it. And I know it makes it very uncomfortable for most but it’s crucial.
That’s why this is actually a very powerful (although we must be go beyond it) platform.
