Exactly. LA is a great case study. Outbreaks are most severe NOT in wealthy/party cities but in cities housing low income essential workers with high numbers of multigen households. I doubt underprivileged essential workers are spreading COVID at bars, restaurants & parties. https://twitter.com/wespegden/status/1337965613113888769
My guess. They pick it up working. Spread to vulnerable people in their house because they can’t socially distance and have no where to isolate. Maybe spread it to other families if they’re sharing childcare and home schooling responsibilities because they can’t afford tutors.
Lack paid sick leave and thus have no choice but to go to work when sick. Don’t have easy access to testing or support from a primary care physician. Maybe scared to get tested or go to the doctor / hospital, particularly if undocumented.
May not receive adequate public health info for a myriad of reasons including but not limited to poor internet access. May end up sharing houses with other family members / families if they lose their job and become evicted. Or to cost share expenses in tough times.
How do I know? I grew up in a low income multigen household. My dad worked many different jobs including in a meat packing plant at one point. Mum also many different jobs (retail, grocery store). Aunts & uncles in hospitality/shipping. We shared houses, Responsibilities, Costs.
I can think of many ways COVID is burning through low income neighborhoods. And it ain’t through living the high life at champagne parities! :)
