That signature style and fashion came from his wife named Josie! She was always perfectly dressed and had worked part time at an upscale clothing store and made sure Dan incorporated that into his Archie work I think he may have brought to pin up fashion page to Archie first 2/
When I was a kid my father would take me to the barber. Our barber caught me drawing and asked if I liked comics “I love em” and he called one of his other clients right then and there “Danny I want you meet this kid” Danny was Dan DeCarlo 3/
So a week or so I’m at Dan DeCarlo’s house, in his studio as he’s going through my notebooks of my comics. Wow. When I met his wife Josie I said “Like the comic?” Duh! He politely laughed and said the comic was named after her. 4/
My grandfather was an illustrator (here’s two covers I have the original on the right) so meeting artists and seeing a studio was familiar but this was the first time I met a comic book artist, saw original comic art, and in his studio, it was incredible And .. 5/
They were so nice to me. I stayed in touch with Dan through the years but I was too shy to make more of the opportunity. Just knowing him and talking once in the blue was great. We literally just missed each other as I started working there. But...6/
