Here’s a story that doesn’t belong in the news but might lift your spirit.

This is Todd Smith. He coaches the 5th grade Jr. Mustangs. Solid BB team.

Tonight they faced a foe they’d already beaten twice. A team that hadn’t won a game all season. 0-10!

And Todd Smith lost.

This 0-10 team lacks a lot of size, a little skill and, most important, confidence. At least 5 games they led in the 2nd half and fell apart. It’s been a tough go.

I know this because my son is on the 0-10 team.

Well, tonight the underdogs put it all together. Battled their butts off. Made shots they usually miss. Rallied from 7 down after half.

After 2 months, imagine their joy!! Like they’d won state! Afterward, they huddle together. Hoot and holler.

Who walks over? Todd Smith.

To be honest, I was worried he was going to make a scene. Our team was being kind of loud. The game was close and a little chippy.

Todd Smith kneels in front of this 1-10 team, a bunch of kids he’s never met, and says — get this — that he was rooting for them.

Sports can suck the life out of you, man. Steal your joy & warp your priorities. But sometimes, out of nowhere, it teaches (your kids and you) perseverance & perspective.

Next time we meet, Todd Smith, I’m cheering like crazy for our team. But I’m rooting for you, too.
