if you're feeling tension or anxiety about completing a task or contributing to a technical conversation because you know you have some relevant knowledge gaps, this is good self awareness and not imposter syndrome. If you're new to any domain you're likely going to feel this way
I described this field to someone recently as "a job where you often have to complete a task when you aren't 100% sure how to do all of the required steps yet"
some people love this feeling and thrive on it as an opportunity, especially if they've been working in supportive environments! For some people it's been a bad experience due to external factors so it becomes terrifying and they internalise failures that aren't their fault
it's a positive thing to be able to employ accurate critical thinking about your technical abilities, and tease out where you think you need to grow in order to perform a role without being stressed out all the time. Sometimes you won't get the external feedback you need for this
it's sometimes difficult to do this because you have to figure out "is this disproportionally low self esteem / an unsupportive environment, or am I missing fundamental skills and knowledge and have the opportunity to learn them to alleviate this feeling?"
if I'm having trouble with this bit, I'll reach out to friends or peers I trust to give me an honest assessment. Someone who won't just naively cheerlead me on without context and is knowledgeable about the specific domain.
I don't really know where I'm going with this, but know that everyone has gaps in their knowledge and it's going to be a thing for us forever. It's important to practice figuring out when that gap is okay to have and when it's impairing your work / causing you too much stress
building a support network of people hyping you up is good for when you're feeling low, but also finding people who help you focus on being effective is really important, so that you're not constantly wondering if you're headed in the right direction
