We all love what Hansi Flick has done with this team. He brought a team that was distanced from the fans, and from the way the club behaves, and brought back the trust within the dressing room. Hansi Flick knows what he wants to do with his team. He knows what he expects of them.
The players have a new found respect for the manager once more. Under Kovac it was evident that the bond was gone, there was no desire from the players to fight for him. They’re players who are employed by the club, so they played for personal pride, not love for their leader.
Hansi Flick has pulled the club back together from the foundations, united the players, and united the fans. He has also brought a playing style that more better reflects Bayern Munich. On the front foot, intimidated by no one, and to entertain.
And whilst all that is admirable, it must unfortunately come with strings attached. This is a system that allows very little in the way of errors. A system that requires absolute concentration, so stringently put together, everyone knowing their role.
What Flick has done so brilliantly is given the players a clear view of what he wants from each of them. And they all respect that, they all are aware of their roles when they step onto the pitch. The high press is just one piece of the Flick jigsaw.
A continued and sustained pressure on the ball is required from all 10 outfield players. The front players must keep the ball as high up, and for as long as possible. The double pivot must be in sync, it must know when to drop off and when to advance, based on the ball’s position
When you take into consideration the amount of energy this sort of system requires from the players, and given the fast paced, quick turn around in game time recently. It is surely understandable that even the slightest drop off, is like a domino effect in this system.
I am not critical of this system, it has gotten valuable results, and I as a fan, feel more connected to Bayern, this is how I want us to be. But, this is an energy sapping time for footballers, this season is going to be the toughest yet, coupled with barely a pre season break.
It is therefore highly likely that our players will be feeling the effects of so many games this past year. We must allow this thought when we criticise them. They’re not robots, fatigue will come into play for many teams. Using it as an excuse for them however, isn’t an option.
We have a hugely proud team, who want the best for the club and for us fans. They would never blame tiredness on any poor performances. Yes it has not been perfect as of late; but small niggly injuries, maybe down to overworked limbs etc, have caused much rotation in the team.
This, again, causes a domino effect within this finely tuned system. If you are even half a yard off, you lose your man, you make the wrong runs. The frustration is normal for us all. But these are the same players that we saw dominate last season.
We all need to be more considerate with our team. Let’s not jump on their back when something doesn’t come off, or a goal goes in. There has been so much football, tiredness and mental and physical fatigue must play a part.
This is a special team, it has a special manager. Let’s look ahead to 2021 and hopefully we can be celebrating another hugely successful season come May 🥳
