years ago I added Dr to my profile here in support of the expertise of expert colleagues & friends that are so often disrespected. 1/7
I worked hard for my PhD - but I have many colleagues and friends around the world who worked even harder than I did - who invested more energy, more time, and more patience because of small-minded decision-makers who cannot be bothered to think beyond the default. 2/7
to those who can’t see the true breadth & depth that is needed for us to advance our fields, advance our societies - it is their loss - but also a loss for all of us. when dedicated colleagues choose to leave the field in disappointment - we all suffer the creativity lost. 3/7
while I have been present at the birth of four children, I am not that kind of doctor - in those instances, we all wore masks and white gowns, but we deferred to the experts - just as it should be in operating rooms, classrooms, cleanrooms, and boardrooms around the world. 4/7
I am sure that several of those surgeons left that room, took off their gowns and were disrespected or unrecognized later the same day, in the halls of their own hospitals, by short-sighted individuals who don’t see beyond the default. 5/7
I don’t often use my honorific, because I find that I can usually be heard and respected even without it, but advantages for me are built in, and others have to work even harder for the same outcome - respect & consideration. let’s do better. 6/7
let’s also revel in the small thrill that we will all get whenever Dr. Biden is introduced over the coming years, representing all of us Dr’s out here with our expertise & experience well-earned. 7/7
