Type's Microexpressions: An Ongoing Thread
Let me begin with the exact moment that inspired me to begin the thread. It's this. Type has his entire focus on Tharn, longing for him to continue talking. The notif goes off, then he blinks and his eyes flit down to the phone. You feel his uneasiness in the quick darting look.
Tharn: "I want the stability and security in life to take care of you." Type's eyes carefully take in what's in front of him. You can see his eyes, delicately moving and studying his face. His head tilts in understanding. His boyfriend, always the romantic. Gulf just nails this.
In this, Type quickly glances from Tharn, to his phone, to his food, and back to Tharn. He doesn't face him, instead going back to work, pretending not to be curious about what his boyfriend is doing. When he's back to his laptop, his eyes deceive him; he's completely distracted.
His eyes are PIERCING in this entire scene. He's not joking and this isn't funny to him. "Tell me everything." He says this with a slight grimace and closing his eyes in frustration. This isn't the loud and angry Type people are used to, which is even scarier.
The delivery of this line! The subtle expressions! He starts with his squinting eyes, zeroing in on her. He delivers a sassy eyebrow raise and my favorite: the lip curl. He is gritting out his final words, barely opening his jaw when he talks. Bottom line: DON'T fuck with him.
"Don't. I'm fine." He's frowning, but you know that he's not mad. His soft voice also tells you that. Shaking his head, waving his hand at him; telling him he's fine, stop worrying about him, it's nothing. Type doesn't want to be a bother. Gulf did this in such a natural way.
This is breathtaking. Type doesn't have to say a single word but his guilt hits you like a truck. It shows in the way he slowly turns his head to look at Tharn, how he almost hesitates to look at his lover in the eye, his eyes glistening, his pained expression. He is SO sorry.
This isn't a microexpression. I just love when he does this. Ok, carrying on.
Type gulps before he speaks. He has SO much he wants to say but he's trying to keep it together. His eyes get wide, open and ANGRY. This expression is reminiscent of Type in SS1. He is fucking PISSED.
When he sees the flowers, he goes from stressed and frustrated, to feeling warm. He remembers Tharn and his face instantly relaxes, letting himself smile. He looks so happy for the first time that day. Reminds me of when he was with out with Puifai: always thinking of Tharn.
I slowed this down, the actual clip is >3 seconds. In less than 3 seconds, Type managed to seductively close his eyes and hover his lips against Tharn's, only to pause and pull back smiling, in the most coquettish way. Pretty sure we were all holding our breaths. Gulf did that!!
Notice how Type's character isn't even facing the camera. But Gulf still delivered. You can see the moment when Type thinks of their anniversary coming up. He starts hesitating, looking around at nothing. He purses his lips in shyness and takes a breath before saying his name.
When San puts his arm around Tharn, Type is livid. He flexes his jaw in annoyance. That's hot.
