Did I do this right?
One of the first things you learn in acting training is that you must have life experience to convey certain things. A 17 year old student will not yet have the experience to convey a 47 year old widow. Straight actors will never be able to convey the loved experience of gay ppl.
When a straight actor plays a gay character, particularly a gay character who would be described as “flamboyant”, they are playing their idea of a flamboyant gay man, w/ no experience of both the bravery and danger of living openly in such a way.
In a musical about the bravery in being true to yourself in the face of adversity, a straight actor simply can’t convey a character who has gone through terrible experiences for they are coming out stronger on the other end. Gay people exist. Cast them.
Besides all of this, in the year 2020, in an era of representation and inclusion, it is simply no longer acceptable to cast straight ppl as gay characters, and it’s no longer acceptable for those straight actors to accept such roles.
