Part of my work on Muslim women in sports has been looking at uniform accommodation.

It is VERY important to remember that in most cases the executive committees and decision making boards of sports federations are men.
My work on hijab-bans in sport lead me down investigative rabbit holes where I discovered it was not simply Muslim women being dictated to, it was all women. Women in beach volleyball, netball and field hockey.

It is about controlling women's bodies.
People say that sport is rooted in tradition. Sport is also deeply rooted in sexism. And there are many layers from which it manifests.

Excluding a women because of hijab is not very different than forcing a woman into a skirt or bikini.

It's about power.
Forcing women out of clothing of their choice is as dangerous as forcing them into clothes under the guise of faith, tradition, or sport history. All of it is misogynistic and unnecessary.
I don't need a man in Lausanne telling me and what other folks who are not cis het men what we can wear. I don't need a man *anywhere* telling me what to wear on the pitch or on the court.
We play at all levels of sport but we can't pick our own wardrobes? HARD PASS.
Sports advocates and activists have been fighting for uniform accommodation because some guy in a leather chair (with a possibly-pending investigation into their alleged corruption) decided it MUST be a skirt, or shorts or whatever.
I will play what I want, and wear what I want that is safe for me and my opponents.

And will absolutely fight alongside of others to do the same. ❤
