Jacobin as appeals to feelings not facts here. New York City has one of the lowest rates of new apartment construction in not only the United States, but the developed world. Jersey City just over the Hudson permits 8x the new units as NYC proper does.
The author is of course the exact sort of person you'd expect to make this sort of argument, an ivy league educated humanist, who seems allergic to actual numbers.
The amount of people deeply involved in urban politics, who seem completely ignorant of how cities are governed always shocks me.
And the weird part is if you ever talk to a norm they'll agree we should build more housing units, at least in the Bay Area. You need to acquire a certain type of brain worms to disagree.
As Jersey City's local housing market aficionado points out, the production contrast is 8x per capita not in total. Just so those of you who are unfamiliar with my account don't think Jersey City is in raw numbers building more units than NYC. https://twitter.com/_3_underscores_/status/1337927234582179840?s=20
