i want to talk abt the 4 main subtypes of BPD (by theodore million), bc i’m not sure many people outside the borderline community know about them + i think it’s really important.

as with any other mental illness, it should be common knowledge that BPD isn’t a one size fits all, there isn’t a ‘wrong’ or ‘right’ type of borderline + it would just be wrong to think so. 5 of 9 symptoms are needed for a diagnosis, so with that comes 256 different combinations.
no borderline will be fixed to the symptoms of one subtype, BPD is too fluid + vulnerable to environmental influences to be reduced to a simple formula. which symptoms and the severity of the symptoms is what categorise each subtype; there’s usually a ‘main’ one for all of us.
IMPULSIVE borderline:
impulsive borderlines tend to be very energetic + charismatic, but are quick to become upset or angry when let down by others (in THEIR perception). they tend to get bored easily, which leads to v risky + impulsive behaviour w/o considering the consequences

DISCOURAGED borderline:
discouraged borderlines are seen as clingy + dependant, but can harbour anger towards others and are easily disillusioned. a strong desire for acceptance and approval, but always feels inferior/inadequate, which makes them more prone to depression.

PETULANT borderline:
petulant borderlines are often unpredictable. they’re more prone to outbursts of anger/frustration, and are usually impatient and easily irritable. because of this, they can be stubborn + defensive, and relationships are usually always complex.

SELF-DESTRUCTIVE borderline:
self-destructive borderlines are more prone to all dangerous behaviours + self sabotage when they appear to make any progress. they lack a stable sense of self + highly dependent on others. they can harbour anger from unconscious/acknowledged desires

i could only write so much about each subtype in a 280 character limit so i really really suggest look into it deeper; here are a couple resources if you’re interested:

all borderlines are deserving of support, patience and understanding no matter what symptoms they display + how unpalatable they are to others.
BPD is an *incredibly* misunderstood mental illness, + if you’re recently diagnosed with borderline, you are so beyond worthy of love.

also just a side note, i know that there’s been a new approach to this with ‘cluster analysis’, but that’s a whole different topic that maybe i’ll touch on another time. :)
