If you want an orthodox doctrine of the Trinity, you need to do the following:

1. Begin where Scripture begins, with divine oneness - “The LORD our God, the LORD is one” (Deut. 6:4)

2. Acknowledge that this one God is simple - “I AM” (Exod. 3:14)
3. Recognize that this one, simple God exists in three persons - “baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, & Holy Spirit” (Matt. 28:19)
4. Understand that these persons are one in every way, only distinguished by their personal relations to one another - “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30)
(This is a crucial Theo-logical step. For anything else to distinguish them - power, glory, authority - would mean they are not each fully God and thus one in every way.)
5. See that the only way to distinguish the persons w/out dividing the divine essence or subordinating one or more divine person is via the eternal relations of origin - “Just as the Father has life in himself, so he has given it to the Son to have life in himself” (Jn 5:26)
6. Read texts that speak of the Son’s submission to the Father as references to him acting acc. to his human nature (& will), not acc. to his divine nature (acc to which he shares the one will of God w/ F & HS) - “taking on the form of a servant, he...became obedient” (Phil 2:8)
(This is called “partitive exegesis,” a hermeneutical tool based on Phil. 2:8, and it is crucial for understanding other biblical texts like 1 Cor. 11:3 and 15:26.)
