A little thread of the beauty of cabinet card versos (inspired by @photograph_tut). CC designs start off simple (a stamp and address), become very ornate, then go on to black cards with gold lettering, and finally embossing. Some examples from Ottoman Turkey, Egypt and Syria

The cabinet card versos of Abdullah Frères - the Ottoman Armenian brothers had studios in Pera (Constantinople) and Cairo. Two contain the tughra of Sultan Abdulaziz, also note the Ottoman Baroque Kufic script on the Cairo card!

Before Sebah and Joaillier (next tweet) there was Pascal Sébah the Ottoman Syrian-Armenian photographer with studios in Pera (Constantinople) and Ezbekiyah, Cairo. The versos feature medals he won at the Paris, Vienna, Philadelphia and Naples expositions.

Jean Pascal Sébah took over his father's business in 1886 and partnered with Polycarpe Joaillier (what a name) in 1888. They were photographers of the courts of Sultan Abdulhamid II and of Prussia. Note the space to write name/date details on one design.

Basile Kargopoulo (Vassilaki (Vasili) Kargopulo) was an Ottoman Greek photographer with studios in Pera and Erdine. These are some of the most beautiful examples of black card/gold lettering I've ever seen.

Studio G. Lekegian & Co, Opposite Shepheard's Hotel, Esbekieh, Cairo (Egypt). Note the two crests with the words "Photographers to the British Army of Occupation" and "Photographers to the Egyptian Army". Not all studio photography is pretty.
