You see all those stories where someone applies for an Internship role and instead gets a full time job offer?

Or where someone negotiates for a salary and gets an offer, 3 times more than what he expected?

Well, I just heard of such a story and want to share it here.

A thread
I'm hoping to motivate someone who is out there, struggling, trying to learn and acquire skills.

So... a little background story...

I have this friend, graduated last year... currently awaiting NYSC...

He started learning python last year...
Since then, he has taken courses
and done some personal projects on data science, devops and some bits of web development.

Most of these were done this year actually... thanks to the whole lockdown.
Sometime last month, he applied for a devops internship role... well, he packaged the personal projects he has done and the various courses he had taken into a CV and applied with it...

He was given assessments, invited for an interview...
I guess everyone was impressed with his performance

He got a call... asking him his salary expectation... he gave a figure typical of an intern... hours later, he got a full time job offer... with a competitive pay. 👇
Next three tweets contain three lessons I'd want to share from this story...

• Keep Learning

There are lots of tech skills... and they all offer many opportunities

- Software Engineering
- Devops
- Data science/Machine Learning
- UI/UX

Whatever you've chosen to learn, invest your time towards getting better at it.
Focus on personal projects

Taking courses are good... but they won't help you as much as working on projects

Try your best to avoid tutorial hell - you take lots of tutorials because you feel you aren't good enough to work on a project

For each project, be able to identify
the various things you did in it... and what you learnt... they'll help your resume.

• Look out for Internship/job opportunities

Most companies don't publicly advertise internships/jobs.

Try to reach out to friends working in tech firms and make your enquiry. You'll get
better directions from them.

It's may not really be as easy as I make it sound though... but these opportunities are always out there.
One thing to note with my guy... he didnt do Computer science or EEE or any tech related course... He did Petroleum Engineering.

Tech still remains one industry that welcomes everyone into it... notwithstanding who your father is... or what course you read in school...
That's why I advise my friends... the job outlook in Nigeria isn't funny... if you're in school or a fresh graduate, invest the time and learn a tech skill...
