evermore- okay i skipped ahead and listened to evermore before ivy and other songs following it because i was really curious to see what the hate was about.
im really glad i did. i wasn’t disappointed. not at all. i absolutely adore this song. it starts off beautifully. taylor’s vocals as usual are flawless but i don’t think i would have actually liked this song if the second half was also just taylor. it would have been way...
too monotonous and dull. Bon iver’s part comes in like a breath of fresh air. it paces up the song, makes it more frantic, gives it energy and breaks the monotony.
to me, the song perfectly captures phases of depression. it starts off as soft and slow representing a phase where you’re numb and unable to function. you try to find those little things that would give you hope. sometimes they help, sometimes they don’t.
the second verse extends the same. the bridge however is a lot more paced up, almost unusual for a taylor song which i feel like captures the uneasiness, anxiety and restlessness very well. it’s sounds almost like a battle.
the frantic nature of the bridge also makes the final chorus sound ever prettier because it all suddenly calms down, almost as if things have gotten better.
this is very evident in how taylor in the first verse sings “That this pain would be for evermore” however the last chorus says “This pain wouldn't be for evermore”
if you’re familiar with bon iver at all, you’d know this is their signature style. this is what they do and they do it real good. infact when i saw them featured on exile, this was what i had expected. the kind of vocals we got from justin on that..
song were a surprise to me i’d never heard him like that. in conclusion, justin vernon is a very versatile man and I absolutely adore him and what he did for this song. a beautiful closing track. i think i prefer it over hoax but lets see i wont speak too soon
