This rally illustrates two of the grossly ignored dangers of Trump for evangelicals since 2016: that he would seduce them into abandoning truth and that he would make the distinction between Christianity and Trumpism in America harder and harder to disentangle.
Just because the majority of a religious group votes for a candidate does not necessarily make that candidate a representative of their faith, but that can happen. And in this case, it did. This heretical hucksterism is the result.
Too many religious leaders ignored these dangers and either stayed silent or promoted Trump. The few who did correctly identify them, like @drmoore, have paid a price for speaking the truth.
The good news is that Christ is on His throne and He will not be mocked. As Eliot wrote, "The Church must be forever building, for it is forever decaying within and attacked from without.โ
What both of the above dangers have in common is that they demonstrate the way politics shape our imagination. The danger is not just bad or evil policies.
In other words, thinking about politics *purely* in terms of *policy* blinds us to some of the other, also significant ways politics affects our society.
