🐟 Fishing has become something of a cause célèbre for Brexiteers, and is an issue used to justify Brexit.

⚓ Forty years ago UK trawlers were more than happy to sail the seven seas casting their nets far and wide for fish in other foreign seas.
⬇️
🇮🇸 That is until the cod wars with Iceland.

🇪🇺 The EEC (as it was) stepped in, and brokered an agreement which placed a boundary around the seas, to ensure fairness and parity.

🇬🇧 The UK has the same rights as other coastal states.

⬇️
💹 But, following Thatcherism and the belief that the UK should concentrate on the service sector and allow manufacturing to decline, the UK Government decided to sell the fishing rights to UK waters.

This wasn't the EUs decision. It was the UK.
⬇️
🗺️ The EEC/EU's fishing boundaries gave security and certainty to nations and fishermen.

It provided an opportunity to invest in the fishing industry, knowing that other trawlers could not impinge.

This provided the space to invest, develop and grow.
⬇️
But no, UK Governments - the ones WE elect - decided not to invest in our fishing industry and instead sell those rights for a quick buck.

Consequently one Spanish trawler has the fishing rights to 88% of Welsh seas.

⬇️
The EU didn't sell those rights. The UK did. Our governments, both Blue and Red allowed this to happen.

Don't forget, last November, Boris Johnson's government awarded the license to track fishing boats to a French firm. So don't believe their talk about backing 'British'.
⬇️
So ask yourself, will a free marketeering government, more concerned about creating wealth for friends and family, really back the fishing industry post Brexit?

They've already shafted the farming industry in Wales.

No. It's all a show. Part of the pantomime.
