At a fancy restaurant, a white executive spotted Lena Horne.

Upon seeing her, he said “so, that’s Lena Horne?” and began calling her a racial slur, so she hit him with an ashtray.

In an interview with Nikki Giovanni, Lena explained the madness and loneliness of the spotlight.
So many parts of this story capture me.

One part is the spontaneity of violent racism, even when you’re just hoping to have an elegant dinner.

Another part is that racists have been getting attacked back and crying innocence since forever.
In the interview,

I also love that Nikki is being brilliant and says “are you trying to say violence purges the soul?”

And Lena says “no, he just made me mad.”
I was watching that interview between Nikki and Lena and just started hearing Jon Brion’s Peer Pressure from Eternal Sunshine.

There’s a musicality in the way Lena speaks, and knew I could use that aptly named song, and intercut other scenes to accentuate her words.

In just this clip, Lena explains how she was picked, how they didn’t understand who they picked, how the youth freed her, and how she bloodied that man.
