The price of lockdown:
We live in Pennsylvania. Our governor has decided that, for our own good, we are no longer allowed to eat indoors at restaurants as of today
17 works as a hostess at a very nice pizza place in town. She’s part time and working for money to play with. So, it’s not really a problem that she is now out of work for the remainder of the year. This thread isn’t about her
She has a friend named Maria who is a full time bartender at the restaurant. Maria is a single mom to a 4 year old daughter with Down’s syndrome. This job is her only source of income. Maria was laid off yesterday, just two weeks before Christmas.
To be honest, the place hasn’t been doing great business for a while now. But the owner has been hanging on. He probably hasn’t really been able to afford to keep Maria full time for a while. But he knows the situation and he has found ways to make it work.
But this latest lockdown was simply too much. He had no choice and I completely understand that. So does Maria. But that doesn’t change reality. A single mother of a special needs child is now unemployed through no fault of her own. For ‘her own good’
She is unemployed because our governor decided that we aren’t adults capable of making rational decisions for ourselves. He doesn’t think we have the right or the ability to assess risk and make a decision that works for us.
He fears that some of us will make choices that he doesn’t agree with. And he can’t handle that. So, he made a choice for all of us that HE approves of. A choice that has nearly destroyed a young family.
Years from now, if we look back honestly, we’ll realize that these lockdowns were one of the most destructive events in American history. Far worse than the impact the virus would have had we simply done nothing at all
At some point, we as a people will need to take back our responsibility to make decisions for ourselves. We will need to remind our politicians that they are our employees and not our rulers.
Until then, innocent people like Maria will continue to be abused by the petty dictators with the massive inferiority complexes who hold executive positions in our government. People who consider themselves to be our intellectual betters.
I’m sure that governor Wolf is pleased with himself this morning. He’s probably convinced that he has protected the people of Pennsylvania from our own stupidity. He’s certain that he knows better than us.
And he remains blissfully unaware of the havoc that he has unleashed and the death and destruction that his policies will yield.
I wish I had some pithy, funny way to end this tirade. I don’t. I just wanted to make sure that people like Maria were not forgotten in this tragedy. And if you are suffering through something similar, know that I am praying for you every day.
God bless.
