Wow, @PopAssocAmerica's journal Demography just does not disappoint, one of the few journals I would just sit down and read (if I sat down and read). The new issue is remarkable. Kudos to editor @mdhayward. Couple things I learned (errors of understanding are on me) /1
From Natalie Nitsche & @srhayford: higher education and later entry into marriage in the US increase the chance of no children, but for women who do become mothers they don't reduce the number of children.

From Yasamin Kusunoki & @JenniferBarbe15: young couples' contraceptive declines, and changes from coital to hormonal, over time, regardless of commitment, intimacy, and conflict. Implications for today? Is "time" determined by the calendar or by relationship hours.... /3
If it's about time together, then time apart because of the pandemic might mean fewer unplanned births as relationships don't progress. From @carohartnett & @alisongemmill: Intended parity is declining a little, but average US women still intend to have more than 2 children. Declines most for young and Hispanic women. paywall: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13524-020-00929-w From @Sci_Hub: https://sci-hub.do/https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13524-020-00929-w /5
Also pressing for today: from @ellymfield: Material hardship increases risky contraceptive behavior among young couples, only partly explained by access barriers and lower contraceptive efficacy. From @NPilkauskas, @MarianaFAmorim, & @RDunifon: history of children's multigenerational living in the US back to 1870, with focus on recent dramatic increase. Great figure on race/ethnic divergence. From @DaveBrady72 & @ZParolin: Deep dive into deep (~6 mil US) and extreme poverty (~3 mil), on the rise especially among childless households (higher if you count homelessness). (Issue includes comment & reply). Life goals: If I read this journal, I would know so much. Fortunately, starting next year it will be platinum OA: free to publish, free to read, at @DukePress. Then we won't have to augment our threads with copies from SciHub https://www.dukeupress.edu/About/OPEN-ACCESS/Demography-Open-Access-Funding.
