This year has been tough on authors. Here's a list of some of my favourite books that debuted in 2020. If you're looking for a last minute holiday gift, look no further! 👇
THE MADMAN'S LIBRARY.

From cryptic messages inscribed on eggshells, to sacred texts written in blood, @foxtosser's beautifully illustrated book about books is delightful, disturbing, and at times, delightfully disturbing. The perfect gift for bibliophiles the world over.
ENDELL STREET

This riveting book by @wendymoore99 tells the tale of the trailblazing women who ran the most remarkable military hospital during the First World War. History of medicine + narrative nonfiction at its best.
THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF BYRON

Fans of the 18th century need not look any further than @EJBrand's meticulously researched saga featuring sex, shipwrecks, and claret-fueled dueling! BONUS: you can get signed copies here: https://bit.ly/3lU9Cu9
DEAD FAMOUS

Celebrity, with its neon glow and selfie pout, strikes us as hypermodern. But the famous and infamous have been thrilling, titillating, and outraging us for much longer than we might realise. @greg_jenner reveals all in this joyous rollick through history!
THE UNIDENTIFIED

Belief in the unprovable & irrational is on the rise: from Atlantis to aliens, from Flat Earth to the Loch Ness monster, the list goes on. @colindickey looks at what all fringe beliefs have in common. Fans of #UnsolvedMysteries, buckle up! This is a great read.
A CAT'S TALE

Paul Koudounaris's book is loaded with photos of his cat, Baba, who introduces us to a rich cast of feline characters from the past. This is an exquisitely crafted love letter to felines. The perfect gift for cat lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
HEARING HAPPINESS

At the age of four, @jaivirdi's world went silent. Meningitis left her alive but deaf, suddenly treated differently by everyone. This book is an exquisite mixture of memoir & medical history. It raises pivotal questions about the endless quest for a cure.
AFRICAN EUROPEANS

The historian @OlivetteOtele traces a long African European heritage through the lives of individuals both ordinary & extraordinary. This is not only an important book, but a timely one. There's a reason why it tops every "must read" history list in 2020!
HALF LIVES

Of all the radioactive elements discovered in the 19th century, it was radium that became the focus of both public fascination & entrepreneurial zeal. @lucyjanesantos_ tells the curious and sometimes macabre story of the element. Science history at its weirdest!
APOLLO'S ARROW

@NAChristakis offers a riveting account of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on American society as it unfolded in 2020, and on how the recovery will unfold in the coming years. An absolute must-read for anyone wanting context for this year's strange events!
THE SPLENDID AND THE VILE

@exlarson's latest book is a startling portrayal of what it was like to be alive in London during the Blitz. My dad got so lost in the text, that he actually worried Britain might lose the war. There's a reason why it's a #1 NYTimes Bestseller!
DARK ARCHIVES

Medical librarian @LibraryatNight is the perfect guide into a dark world populated by Victorian criminals, bodysnatchers, & anatomists--all of whom contributed to the gruesome art of binding books with human skin. Meticulously researched, endlessly fascinating.
MEDICAL DOWNFALL OF THE TUDORS

The Tudor dynasty died out because there was no heir of Elizabeth I’s body to succeed her. Henry VIII, despite his six marriages, had produced no legitimate son who would live into old age. @SylviaBSo looks at the medical downfall of the Tudors.
THE MUTTER MUSEUM

The @MutterMuseum is one of the strangest medical museums in the world, featuring oddities like a "giant megacolon." And now @muttercurator has written a children's book about this weird & wonderful collection. A fun read for all ages!
