"Hello, Jill Biden, I'd like to request, in the most condescending way possible, that you do not use the title that you earned because its not a MD"
This debate comes every so often on twitter, so here is the conclusion:
*PhDs predate MDs, and the medical profession grabbed the title of doctor to make themselves appear more credible
*Female & POC scholars often as a way to insist people fo not overlook their real credentials
Now that we have the substance out of the way, I'd like to go back to how bad the op-ed is. Not its arguments, but as a piece of writing. The next two paragraphs are about how this guy got an honorary PHD, and people called him doctor. Which apparently he was fine with.
Next is the "old man yelling at cloud" portion: you should not use your Dr. title, because standards have slipped: people don't even learn Greek and Latin anymore!

If that's your standard for using your doctor title, my guess is that 99% of active PhDs (or MDs) can't use theirs.
Now we are back to honorary doctorates *which are a completely separate topic since Jill Biden earned her degree.*
Standards are slipping here too, ever since they gave it to that lady tennis player Billie Jean King.
The majority of this piece about how this guy has an honorary degree title, and people call him doctor, but it’s a real honorary degree title, not like these celebrity ones. Also, something about political correctness (which caused him to get fired from an old job).
The grand finale of this flaming shit-bag piece, where presumably the editor reminds him this is supposed to be about Jill Biden: she shouldn’t use her Dr. title since she has the title of First Lady.
Makes no more sense than anything that preceded it.
Honest question @WSJopinion: Do you have any editors? If yes, how does something like this get published? Did something read it and truly believe it was a coherent argument, where evidence supported claims?
NYT gets the brickbats, but WSJ churns out much worse opinions pieces.
