We lived full-time in an Airstream for three years.

Here's what I learned about living small.

++ THREAD ++
1) You appreciate everything.

Living small makes you appreciate way more than you did before. The small things. Inexpensive things.

To this day, it's totally changed my perspective on life.

2) You get smarter.

Seeing more of the country and how other people live and the struggles they deal with makes you smarter. Wiser.

It crushed many of my previously-held assumptions about this country.
3) You become resourceful.

Sometimes, shit happens. We had a tire blow out in the middle of Utah.

Things go wrong all the time, and the more that you can do yourself, the better off you will be.

4) You don't need as much as you think.

We cooked gourmet meals in our tiny Airstream's kitchen.

Those things you can't live without? You probably can.
5) The best spaces = function over form.

We entertained MORE in our little 200 square foot Airstream than we did in our 1,600 square foot home.

Design your spaces to work for you, regardless of its size.
6) You learn the value of flexibility.

Plans are great. But, travel teaches us that rigidity is tough.

The best plans are flexible.

Happiness stems from our willingness to adjust.
7) Our world is fucking beautiful.

Living in cities, we don't get to see how epic our world truly is.

Traveling gets us outside of our comfort zone and into some TRULY epic scenery.
8) Most RVs are crap.

RVs are just cheaply made, even ones that cost $100k or more.

Be prepared for things to break. All the time. It will happen.
9) Campgrounds isn't camping.

The most beautiful things we've seen were outside of campgrounds.

Campgrounds are like a neighborhood for your trailer. It ain't the same thing.

Stop assuming staying in campgrounds is "camping".
10) It makes relationship problems worse.

My wife and I never had a problem, but living within 10-feet of your spouse WILL make underlying problems worse.

Bringing you closer together - literally, may not be the answer to your problems.
11) Home is where the heart is.

It doesn't matter where you are or where your travels take you.

Your home is anywhere you want it to be.
We now live in a 100% off-grid, solar-powered home in the Arizona desert.
