Many of us have been suicidal because of ableism telling us we are burdens on the state, friends, & our families. I've been there too as have many of my disabled friends w. visible disabilities. It's an experience that's hard to explain & for me took years to work through. https://twitter.com/SarahJama_/status/1337770519337312261
It's so easy to lose your will to live when you're dehumanized for the way you look, speak, and move. With these changes to MAiD I'm confident I could qualify. I don't want to, but years ago maybe I would have. Many people will access it now who are tired of fighting ableism.
Again, I'm pro choice in life and in death. But I'm worried that as a society we have not adequately pushed against the idea that disabled lives aren't worth living. Expanding this legislation makes it easier to let people die before we build a world that fits them. Is this just?
Bill C7 is a huge failing on our society that will impact poor people without access to therapy, people living in poverty, incarcerated disabled people, seniors who don't want to be in our failing LTC systems, Indigenous disabled people who already battle high suicide rates...
I expect more from our elected officals. Ya'll talk about courage but then vote things up because it's going to pass anyway. Where is your courage?
