I want to thank everyone who responded to my recent Call for Evidence. We had well over 20k responses, I can already see many have practical suggestions on how we strengthen interfaith relationships, and the relationship between Government and faith groups.
Our country is a great place to have a faith, change one’s faith or to have no faith at all. The rich diversity of religions, faiths and beliefs makes us the amazing, strong and capable country we are.
Nevertheless, I regret there were some attempts by some divisive voices to use the Call for Evidence as a means to ignite sectarian differences and marginalise others.
Sadly some people have been very hurt by this, and I am sorry this happened. Sectarianism, abuse and hatred should have no place in our society.
My report and my recommendations will be published next year. In the meantime I call upon the British Government to remain vigilant in its promotion of freedom of religion or belief as a fundamental human right both here and abroad.
It was important for my Call for Evidence to enable people to declare their faith or belief as they choose. I look forward to continuing my work in an inclusive manner with all faith communities, and again I want to express my huge gratitude to everyone who took part.
