Every House committee w/any connection to the causes, methods, or effects of the Republican party’s open attempts at autocracy & consequent negligence re: Covid should establish a standing inquiry—transparent subpoenas, hearings, reports—until requisite answers are found.
The rule of law does not require forgiving those who would destroy it on the lame promise that they won’t do it again. And it certainly doesn’t require even a minimum of clemency for the self-avowedly disloyal rejects of a political movement that refuses to apologize at all.
Every single Monday morning from now until committee inquiries are closed, a representative coalition of House democrats should hold a regular 9am press conference in front of the Capitol to simply and clearly explain what each committee will be doing that week.
And every single Monday midmorning, the week’s highest-profile hearing should be held & broadcast as widely as possible. America should know when she goes to bed each Sunday night that she will wake up to see leaders in her active defense. Publicly. Reliably. Transparently.
And every single hearing should be coupled in word and deed with a Democratic public-good project to benefit the state, district, county, or city most closely affiliated with the person being questioned. Expose their inadequacy, Democrats, but prove your own worth, too.
There are tons of other things the Democrats should be doing with control of the presidency and half the legislature, and every single one uses a very simple formula: Communicate (w/the public), juxtapose (their plans w/yours), provide (things people need and want). Simple.
But pressure on weak, ineffectual Dem leaders from other Members & the public must begin NOW & proceed loudly. E.g., progressives could hold the weekly Capitol press conference alone re: what they’re doing w/the power they have. Communicate, juxtapose, provide. Same principle.
