I legit use Teachers Pay Teachers with teacher candidates so they can visualize, inquire upon, analyze, and discuss racist, deficit-based, and uncritical curriculum. That should tell you all you need to know about the dumpster fire that is TPT. It’s gotta go.

For those asking, we honestly just peruse the website, pull some articles/lessons, and engage in dialogue. We use the I Notice/I Wonder framework as a starting point. We then use the following questions/prompts:
After viewing the curriculum (lesson plan/activity, learning materials, etc.), describe what students are supposed to learn.
Do you notice any gaps in the curriculum? If so, what do you notice and/or wonder is missing? What implications does this have for teaching and learning?
Do you notice any gaps in the curriculum? If so, what do you notice and/or wonder is missing? What implications does this have for teaching and learning?
What feelings and/or values does the curriculum encourage, if at all?
As a pre-service teacher/future educator, what impressions do you have about the curriculum you are examining?
As a pre-service teacher/future educator, what impressions do you have about the curriculum you are examining?
Does the curriculum promote critically conscious learning? Why or why not?
Does the curriculum respond to the specific issues and/or needs of the current times? What would you add or change to the standards to be more relevant to students, teachers, families, and communities?
Does the curriculum respond to the specific issues and/or needs of the current times? What would you add or change to the standards to be more relevant to students, teachers, families, and communities?
Does the curriculum foster the capacity for students and educators to be change agents and active in social justice causes? Why or why not?
We use these questions to examine lesson plans/activities on TPT, but also a wide variety of curriculum. We also use these prompts to analyze district, state, and/or national level content standards.
Ultimately, the goal is for teacher candidates to recognize their own inherent brilliance and self-efficacy so they will have the confidence to create curriculum informed by their students and local communities rather than rely on scripted or packaged curriculum.
