The Labour Party and Conservative Party are now fighting to represent the interests and values of voters in red wall constituencies and other parts of provincial England. Previously these people voters were ignored and disparaged. There’s one for you. https://twitter.com/Aiannucci/status/1337679955640143873
I’m much more aware which of the people I know harbour deep class prejudices. So that’s number 2 for me.
Attitudes to immigrants and immigration have improved since 2016. That’s 3.
The U.K. will no longer be affected to the same extent by disfunction in the Eurozone. That’s 4.
People are more politically engaged. That’s 5.
Accountability increases due to key policy areas (eg immigration) being returned to the competence of the U.K. Parliament. That’s 6.
Legislation can no longer be created via the opaque trilogues that operate within the EU. 7.
The British are no longer a block on the political integration required to make the Eurozone more functional. 8.
We are now completely removed from the inevitable future wrangling about ever closer Union which would have made the European debate in this country even more toxic. 9.
We are outside the CAP. 10.
I guess one of the big disadvantages is that the hollowing of democracy partly caused by EU membership means that @Aiannucci will no longer be able to make incisive comedies about the absurd effects of depoliticised politics, which is, and I mean this sincerely, a crying shame.
One of my favourite scenes in The Thick of It is when they talk about hiving off immigration to an independent body so that it would no longer be a political issue. Such a clever piece of satire, so utterly at odds with Iannucci’s epically dull Twitter persona.
