today, friends, we are going to talk about UNFORBIDDEN FRUIT, a 1928 novel about life in women's colleges which starts off with a foreword about "compressed femininity" resulting in a sexually charged "prison psychosis"
the author who also wrote the books "flaming youth" and "summer bachelors" was confused why women in college didn't want to marry and then wrote a novel about the sexual deviancy he imagined was taking place
choice phrases so far include the first known use of the word "femaelstrom"
on page 109 Miss Clarke struggles with her "virginally murderous feelings towards the masculine world" and I'm not sure the book wants us to approve but
in a lot of ways this man actually wrote a very gay book without realising that's what he was doing because in some chapters the sapphic energy is blinding (looks askance at Sylvia "energetically towelling in the communal bathroom")
