Our workshop on "Navigating Broader Impacts of AI Research" is happening TODAY. We're going to talk about something the AI/ML crowd has been avoiding for a while now... research ethics. ( https://nbiair.com/ )

First up: @hannawallach will grace us with the opening Keynote!
Next, @RosieCampbell chairs a panel on "Ethical oversight in the peer process", with @BrownSarahM, Heather Douglas, @IasonGabriel & @bhecht.

They'll be commenting on the heated discussion around @NeurIPSConf Impact statements, reflecting on how that went & what should be done.
Then, I'll chair two panels back-to-back.

One discussion with @annaeveryday, @nunuska, @vinayprabhu, @undersequoias & Sherry, an organizer and Mturk worker. We'll talk about how AI hurts people & the changes the field needs to make to adapt our default thinking about this.
Next, a 🔥 discussion with @jlkoepke, @mathbabedotorg, @Combsthepoet, @CynthiaRudin & Shawn Bushway on how researchers should respond to controversial topics like predictive policing. Should we engage? criticize? organize? avoid? defund? What are the consequences of each option?
@RosieCampbell will come back to lead a discussion on a specific case study - specifically that of large language models. What are the impacts? How do we build & publish responsibly? @Miles_Brundage, @colinraffel, @ZeerakW, Bryan McCann & @natschluter will dive into the details!
Finally, @s010n will lead us to the end - a panel on practical strategies to do better w/ @AshleyCasovan, @timnitGebru, @shakir_za & @metaviv.

Then a final roundtable with academics, funders, corporate & publishers - ie. @gleemie, @epistemographer, @benzevenbergen & @LCVenema
