Funny story 😬 a few months before we signed our book deal I had a random encounter with a book designer, who’s now a friend, that ended up with them showing my work to staff at the publishing house they worked in at the time…
…the staff really liked my work but they couldn’t get over me not having a website, despite all my work and contact info being readily available on my social media platforms 🤷🏿‍♂️ so they didn’t reach out.
Fast forward 4yrs and I still don’t have a website 😐 but what I do have is an award winning bestselling picture book 😁
I share this story to say to artists that a “professional veneer” isn’t everything. If your work is good then put it out into the world by any means available. Don’t get hung up on what you think the industry needs you to look like or stuff you can attach later down the line.
And to publishers and agents who still don’t get this…stop getting hung up on the “perfect package” 🙄 if you like the work…hire the person. Simple. The only person that’s gonna lose out is you. Good work almost always finds a way in the end.
