In 1958 Britain deployed its navy against Iceland’s coastguard and fishermen, after Iceland annexed 12 nautical miles of fishing zone

The UN had to mediate, in 1961 Iceland got to keep its expanded water

and then...
In 1972 Iceland extended fishing limits to 50 nautical miles, their PM said it was a battle against ‘colonialism/imperialism’

The coast guard used net cutters (pictured) on boats in their territory. 32 uk frigates were deployed.

The UK ultimately had to accept the annexation.
In 1975 Iceland did it again 😯

Britain sends in the navy 🛳

Iceland rams boats. Threatens to leave NATO, wins and expands exclusive fishing zone to 200 nautical miles.
So please don’t waste our time and money, along with the toxic emissions from these ships, by pretending you’re willing to fire on NATO allies over a fish.

It will make you an international pariah, and you’ll lose for the fourth time.
Btw I am not just reading out Wikipedia, I have a degree in maritime law 👀
