I was just thinking about how I used to look up escort ads in the yellow pages and newspaper when I was a little kid and how magical they seemed, forbidden, sexy, fascinating.
Now I look around Twitter and scroll down hundreds of beautiful, intelligent, creative and witty providers, with professional photoshoots, selfies, some showing their full face...
Providing so much free content and engagement just to show people that we are real and sexy and fun to be around. Honestly, part of me wishes I'd been of age during the newspaper era. While there was more stigma, it seems like there was more privacy.
I understand that social media is imperative for all businesses now, but when it comes to sex work it feels like we are basically cultivating parasocial relationships in order to hustle bookings and I suppose after 3 years on this app I'm starting to get the feeling its too much.
I'm so, so grateful to the colleagues and clients I've met on here. But I can't help thinking about all the conversations I've had with industry veterans of 20+ years who tell me of rocking up to the brothel in packet lingerie and leaving with a handbag full of cash every night.
This constant need to give so much of ourselves before we've even been booked doesn't sit so right with me.
It does reduce stigma, but on the other hand it's relentless labour. And due to the way social media seeks to erase us, we don't have the audiences we deserve.
By that, I mean, a mainstream audience. Being an open sex worker on the internet is a ghetto. Visibility is a trap. I see pictures and content from my collegues and think, you could be an influencer with 100k+ followers.
I found it really flattering when someone would book me from Twitter and say they listened to my podcast, read my website and followed me on Twitter for 2 years. Now I do the math in my head as to how many hundreds of hours of labour it took to get this booking.
