So on Tuesday the government are going to sneak through #CETA, the “free trade” agreement between Europe & Canada. Putting the flaws aside, this is being done without proper scrutiny (avoiding the Seanad) for reasons that will become clear. #StopCETA
This will be a thread.
There are many concerns with the deal. But don’t take my word for it. Here’s @greenparty_ie MEP @GraceOSllvn
There is, as they say, always a tweet. In this case there are loads of them. But I like this one from the @greenparty_ie official account using the #StopCETA. It’s almost as if they are betraying their voters.
Here’s another one where @EamonRyan raises the very real issue of CETA giving corporations the power to sue states. This is part of the “free trade” deal you see.
Reading his words now I think he might’ve meant it as a positive? #StopCETA
The idea that we need to give companies the ability to sue countries for making laws that can protect citizens is insane.
It’s also unnecessary.
@FineGael will argue that#StopCETA is anti-trade. Yet Ireland, we are told, is awash with FDI. Surely if we were a threat to their profits they wouldn’t come here? It can’t be both, boys. Why do you want to give them more powers?
I’m reminded of a quote, but can’t remember who said it:

A free trade agreement is when the many lose their rights and protections. The few make all the money and the politicians insist that everybody wins.
Have to add this by @attractaub, who is a regular contributor to the @TortoiseShack. I’m summarising: They’re using an article of the constitution, 29.5.2, to avoid democratic scrutiny in order to help corporations avoid democratic laws.
