So, due to the events of today with Dream, I'd like to make some things more clear for anyone who isn't really too huge into speedrunning. Note, this is not me defending dream in any way. Just giving a picture of what goes on with speedrunning.
A question I've seen pop up a lot is "Why'd they target Dream, and not the other speedrunners?" The answer to that is as follows. Y'see, whenever you go to submit times, your time has to be verified. No matter how good or bad it is, it always has to be verified.
Its not just a thing with the minecraft speedrunning community either! Most if not all games have some form of verification system. Its in place because otherwise any random joe could claim they had a world record and it'd be accepted without question. So its important to have.
Secondly "Dream's spot was low. Why'd they go after him if he was low on the leaderboards?" Y'see, sometimes, cheated speedruns can get through every now and again. It's happened many times before with other games and minecraft itself.
Now, it doesn't matter what place you're at on the leaderboards, from my knowledge what most communities would do is remove your time if you were suspected of cheating, and put it back if it turned out you didn't actually cheat. At least I think so.
Now, different games have their own different sets of rules! So, that necessarily may not be the case. They didn't target Dream specifically, rather they suspected him of cheating thus did an investigation. Its normal for these types of things to happen every once in a while.
Now, this is only from my own knowledge. So if I missed anything, feel free to comment what I missed. I've seen plenty of people confused about this whole situation on that side of things and just wanted to say how these things should usually go.
If I made a mistake in any of this, feel free to correct me as well! I wanna educated all I can about what exactly goes on with stuff like this.
