Raja had a beautiful wife name Rani Ganesh Kunwari. Though Raja was a Krishna devottee, his wife's dedication was towards Shri Ram.

One day she insisted her husband to make a temple dedicating it to her Ram. Now ofcourse a man, even though a King, cannot ever refuse his wife. So with all pomp & pageantry Raja began the construction of a temple, which we know as Chaturbhuj Mandir.
Actually it so happened that Rani had a dream visitation by Shri Ram himself instructing her to build a temple dedicated to him. So as soon as Raja commenced the work of building the temple Rani embarked on her trip to Ayodhya to fetch an image of Rama to be housed in the temple.
As per local legends, our Rani did very hard penance in Ayodhya which melted Shri Ram's heart & he agreed to travel to orchha with Rani in his childhood form.
Upon her return the Chaturbhuj Temple was still under construction, hardly surprising as itβs a massive building, I suspect may have taken decades to complete. So whilst everyone waited for the temple to be completed, the idol of Rama was placed in her palace, the Rani Mahal.
She was, however, unaware of an injunction that the image to be deified in a temple could not be kept in a palace.Β As soon as the temple was complete attempts were made to move Ramaβs idol out of the Rani Mahal, but all efforts failed β the idol βrefusedβ to be relocated.
So the Chaturbhuj Temple remained without an idol in its santum, and as the Rama idol was now being actively worshipped in the Rani Mahal palace, the building was converted into the Ram Raja Temple.
The name ChaturbhujΒ is a combination of 'chatur' meaning "four" & 'bhuj' means "arms" which literally translates to "one who has four arms", Our Vishnu. This is how Chaturbhuj Temple, ideally constructed for Shri Ram became a Vishnu temple. Jaise Prabhu ki ichha.
FUN FACT:
It is said that the towers of the temple, when built, had been covered with gold plating which over the years has been pilfered
World's oldest zero is carved in this temple.
Orchha has been declared a UNESCO heritage city.

Correction: There is another Chaturbhuj Temple at Gwalior which has "the first zero carved". Both are different temples.
