So you want to learn a few things, or at least know where to start: A Thread. Caveats up front: 1. Google is your friend, buy what you can, where you can, and if all else fails, my DMs are open.
2. Eat the meat, spit out the bones. None of these sources are perfect, some of them are old, but here there be treasure. Get out in the field (for some of you, a literal damn cowfield) and develop your skills.
3. The info here is exactly that, info, don't go trying shit you've got no business trying without proper supervision and training (and in some cases, a license).
4. Some of this stuff you can practice on the weekend with the wife and kids (hiking and camping and such), so go out, have fun, and learn something new! BUT BE FUCKING SAFE!
Lets knock out some general use/lots of info sources: How to Stay Alive in the Woods by Bradford Angier. Written in 1956, so don't take the clothing section too seriously. But if you're looking for a primer on Sustenance, Warmth, Orientation, and Safety, this is a good start
STP 21-1-SMCT, the Soldier's Manual of Common Tasks, Level 1. For our purposes, lots of good info basic info on survival and caring for yourself. Skip the weapons stuff until you've got some supervised training. You'll only hurt yourself.
The Survival Handbook - Colin Towell. Dude was in the Royal Navy for 30+ and worked with Richard Branson. There's a solid packing list in here.
SAS Survival Handboook, John Wiseman. Dude was the youngest guy to pass SAS selection and got out as a Sergeant Major. Tons of great info and case studies to keep the book from being too dry.
Fieldbook - Boy Scouts of America. Say what you will about how they've kowtowed to political pressures and such over the last decade, but BSA has been doing the thing longer than some operators have been operating on operations, operationally.
Now on to more specialized information, including keeping your nasty self clean. For that we have TC 4-02.3 (AKA Basic Hygiene for Simps) Herein you'll learn how to handle yourself, encourage your buddy, and deal with everything from clean water to toxic waste to poop.
Next, you'd all be hosed without some kind of Maps app. NO MORE SAYS I! My personal favorite, TC 3-25.26 (How to Get Around). You'll learn how to read a map, find yourself on it, find where you want to be, and how to get there. And you'll only get lost once or twice!
But my guy, I'm Urban, what do I do for maps and shit? Take a deep breath, jump online now (while the internet is still a thing and before @CONUS_DOMINATOR eats it) and check out Thomasmaps(.)com to get an up-to-date copy of your own soon-to-be Megacity, uh, metro area.
Next begins the section of "IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING, DON'T FUCK AROUND. YOU WON'T BE THE ONE THAT FINDS OUT. YOUR DEAD BUDDY WILL."
Just putting caveat number three out there again.
Wonder how folks in austere conditions deal with medical/trauma situations? Check out the following resources, Tactical Combat Casualty Care, the Ranger Medic Handbook, the SOF Medical Handbook and I've gotta throw Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) out there, too.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDRENS!? McMaster Children's Hospital put out a great survival guide for their Peds Residents. All I'll say is this, kids compensate great until they don't, so take a BLS course, keep your eyes open, and be ready to beat feet to next level of care quickly.
This is by no means exhaustive, but there's enough info here to get you learning how to move around and stay alive long enough to do everything @secret_returns has been putting out in their ongoing series on RedState.
@secret_returns, @DeucianRevival, @DempMcgee, @DwarfToday, @Dillingersays, @ErictheDry, @Barry61736994, @DeanBradleySFF, @albert_celis1, @Boojahideen, @Shanti__Ananda, @25th_Prestige, and anyone else who cares to gander, here's the super rough outline of "Basics for Babbies"
You'll notice there are no links here, that's by design. Link's die or get trapped all the time. And you should buy hard copies when you can As I said above, Google or DM me and if it's something I don't have digits for I'll sandbox a VM and do my best for you.
You can follow @DxAppalachian.
