Thank you to all who attended the @ResistanceAI panel yesterday. Some of you really appreciated the points about global South and my critique of the Data/AI/ML for social good Developmental paradigm #NeurIPS2020. I want to add some thoughts:
Just as @red_abebe and @Abebab urged us to think (efficiency/social good) “for whom”, I want to add “by whom” - who do you see participating in projects, panels and gaining access to big datasets from global south countries? How many are not intl dev or western academics
Further, if anyone wants to discuss and work on this, how do we call for harms and risks review in intl dev funded Data/AI for social good projects? How do we encourage and institute disclosures about data sources and reflexivity within Social Good interventions? #NeurIPS2020
Finally, “Nothing About Us, Without Us” should hold true for tech research, access to research data and funding in the global south. The “us” is only a strategic coalition - never uniform or essentialized, a shifting and responsive community that centers minoritized voices
